Most common hoof trimming mistakes and how to avoid them

Functional hoof trimming is a key practice for maintaining claw health and preventing injuries. However, even when the correct technique is applied, it’s easy to make mistakes that can negatively impact the cow’s welfare.

Below, we present the most frequent trimming errors. They are listed in order of severity, based on their potential negative consequences for the animal:

1. Excessive toe trimming that results in thin soles, usually due to overzealous work. Sole thickness is a critical factor in hoof health. A study published in the Journal of Dairy Science found that cows with thin soles (<5 mm) at calving had a higher incidence of hoof lesions during early lactation. Although current recommendations suggest a thickness of 5 to 7 mm, this range may be insufficient. Maintaining a sole thickness greater than 7 mm is key to reducing the risk of injury.

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, excessive trimming can alter weight distribution and increase the risk of sole ulcers and lameness.

2. Excessive cosmetic trimming: removing the axial wall at the toe. Removing the supporting wall, particularly in the axial and abaxial areas of the toe, can shift pressure directly to the tip of the third phalanx. This region is especially vulnerable, as it lacks the protective cushioning of the digital cushion.

3. Too much trimming of the heels and too little of the toe. This approach can create very stable hooves but results in a gradual loss of the natural hoof angle. Trimmers often avoid the toe out of fear of thinning the sole, thinking this will prevent related problems. However, failing to preserve the correct angle can cause long-term biomechanical issues.

4. Inadequate or poorly positioned modeling. The axial groove is often trimmed too shallow or placed too far forward (cranially). When this happens, the pressure on the rear part of the third phalanx is not properly relieved. This is particularly concerning in the area of the flexor tuberosity, which is highly prone to developing sole ulcers. If the pressure remains in that region, the risk of injury increases significantly.

5. Trimming the top of the claw for cosmetic reasons. This type of trimming has little impact on gait, but it removes the periople, a natural protective layer on the hoof wall, and offers no functional benefit. When taken to the extreme, it is more commonly seen in lay-over chutes, where the top of the claw is easily visible and accessible. In cows, this kind of trimming leaves a visible mark when they walk, which some farmers mistakenly view as a sign of a « good » trim.
